Ann Heaps

This is a photograph of Charlie, my elderly, mostly retired nag; he has just come in from the field and is starting his haynet, having eaten his bucket of feed; he lives with his two friends on a farm in deepest Surrey; their parents take it in turns with me and my younger daughter to look after all three horses and the four feral stable cats, who keep the vermin from the horse feed (horses being untidy eaters).
In summer, Charlie and his two friends spend a great deal of time out of doors, only coming into their stables when it's too hot or the flies are too fierce and numerous. In winter, they are put into their stables with their feed and a large haynet each just as the light is fading and are turned out in the morning after breakfast. Charlie's companions are exercised regularly in the woods, but Charlie pulled one of his stifle joints in the summer and has been 'resting' ever since.
