At 17:00, I was looking at the sample of freshwater invertebrates taken from the River Witham at Claypole, Lincolnshire. I work as an Ecological Appraisal Officer for the Environment Agency and data provided by this sample analysis gives valuable information on the water quality and general flow conditions of the river in the preceding weeks/ months. In addition, by identifying to species level (where possible) information can be gathered on the conservation value of this stretch of the river and changes in the distribution of species (important as regards climate change). In this sample I found a species of caddis fly called Brachycentrus subnubilus, the first time we have recorded this species in Lincolnshire.
